Perhaps you’ve heard about this german shepherd, also called Lucca the Miracle Dog. She is a military dog that served on more than 400 missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Partly thanks to Lucca, no soldiers got hurt in the line of duty, as she was able to detect more than 40 bombs.
Sadly enough, the 12-year old german shepherd wasn’t so lucky. She got injured during a patrol mission in 2012 in Afghanistan. When she discovered a bomb, which was succesfully dismantled by accompanying soldiers, another bomb exploded. Lucca’s front legs were blown up and she suffered from severe burn wounds. Despite her injuries, she was able to save her injured accompaniers.
Lucca got rushed to a military hospital in Germany. Luckily, doctors were able to safe her life, but she did however lose one front leg. Afterwards she got relocated to California for her revalidation. Now she’s found a home with her trainer Chris Willingham who stood by her side during her revalidation. The three legged dog is enjoying her well deserved retirement. According to Chris Willingham, ze loves walks with her adoptive family, swimming and sleeping on the couch. Recently, the duo flew to London where Lucca received the PDSA Dickin Medal. This is considered to be the highest award for animals.
